Are you trying to make every penny count? The Fair Trade Shop can help!

Most of us are feeling the pinch at the moment. The Fair Trade Shop, in Upper Brook Street, believes that every penny spent on shopping should count, not just towards a practical use, but also in the lives of the people who make that item. Over 30 years ago a group of Traidcraft representatives pooled their resources to form The Fair Trade Shop in order to reach a wider public with products from around the world. Since then they have been carefully selecting the products they put on their shelves to make sure they are beautiful, well made and that the makers have been paid a fair price for their handiwork while keeping their environmental impact to a minimum.

The Fair Trade Shop is part of BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK - a growing and diverse network of independent shops and businesses who have Fair Trade at their very core. Between them, BAFTS members source and stock a wide range of products - from cards to candles, board games to bangles, scarves to sun catchers and pretty much everything in between.

As the UK’s network member of the World Fair Trade Organisation, BAFTS ensures all its members adhere to the WFTO’s Ten Principles of Fair Trade. These principles are focused on providing trade opportunities for marginalised and economically disadvantaged producers, while ensuring that they are paid a fair price and have safe working conditions. The principles also cover respect for the environment, no child or slave labour and non- discrimination.  At least 60% of the stock sold by a BAFTS member shop is verifiably fair trade while the rest is ethically produced, including products that are plastic free, zero waste, or locally made.

Having survived the pandemic by working together with other BAFTS members, The Fair Trade Shop now finds the current cost of living crisis is threatening their survival once again.“  So, come to The Fair Trade Shop, support a local trader and ensure that your money is well spent  in every sense of the word.

Would you like to help make the world a better place, for people and planet?

Do you find yourself with time to spare for a worthy cause?

The Directors at the Fair Trade Shop are seeking like-minded people to act in a voluntary capacity as directors of the Fair Trade Shop Ltd, which was set up as a company limited by guarantee on a not-for-profit basis.  The aim of the company is to sell fairly-traded and eco-friendly products in order to support producers and artisans in countries struggling to survive in a changing climate and encourage the use of sustainable products, reducing our use of plastic.

Two of the present directors have been serving in this capacity since the company’s formation over 30 years ago, and new directors are needed to take up the baton and carry on their work, enabling this shop to continue to serve the people of Ipswich and the surrounding area.

These are ‘hands-on’ positions;   involvement will take time and commitment. Retail experience would be an advantage.

If you live in or around Ipswich and feel passionate about fair-trade and the future of our planet  please contact Margaret Fish at info@thefairtradeshopipswich.co.uk, or phone the shop on 01473 288225 and leave a message between the hours of 9.30 – 16.30. We will be happy to discuss further.

It is worth remembering that it is often the small steps not the giant leaps that bring about the most lasting change.
